The Stroller You Want vs. The Stroller You Need
|

Before you actually shop around for a stroller, it’s a good idea to figure out what you’re really looking for. Otherwise, you’ll end up spending more money than you wanted to on a product that adds stress to your life instead of reducing it.
Choosing a baby stroller is a lot like buying a car. There’s the one you want and then there’s the one you really need. For some, it amounts to the same thing. But if what you want isn’t exactly what you need, then choose the one you need. Here’s a quick guide to figuring out what you and your baby really need in a stroller. |
• Who’s pushing? The person who will do most of the pushing should have a say in choosing which stroller to get. Too low, and you’re asking for back aches. Too high, and you sacrifice some maneuverability. Find a workable average if more than one person will be taking a turn pushing the stroller. This shouldn’t be too much of a problem though. If the stroller doesn’t come with telescoping handlebars, you can hit the catalogs and find handlebar extenders for tall people.
• What color? Yes, color should be taken into consideration too. If you’re taking the baby for a stroll in poorly lit areas or prefer to jog in the early evening, bright colors will help motorists see you better. If you live in a big city where smog, dirt and general grime have a way of sticking to everything, darker colors like black or navy will do a better job of hiding it until you get it washed properly.
• Where will you store it? Think about where you’ll store the stroller when it’s not in use. It may not be an issue for some but you’ll certainly want to consider this if you don’t have a lot of space at home to work with.
• How often will it be used? If you see yourself taking the baby on a lot of short trips, you need something lightweight that will fold easily into your car trunk. On the other hand, if you plan on taking a lot of long walks with the stroller in your own neighborhood, you’re probably going to appreciate something a little more sturdy and durable. Check the wheels and see if they’ll hold up for the long haul.
• Where and when will you stroll? Knowing in advance what kind of terrain you’ll be strolling on helps a lot. Outdoors or rough pavement will require heavy duty wheels. Indoor areas like malls call for smaller wheels. Consider the climate too. Colder climes require a little more protection from the elements. Don’t forget to plan ahead for the seasons.
• How much? Decide on how much you’re comfortable spending on a stroller before you start shopping around for one. This filters your choices down to prioritizing the features that are most important for you and your baby.
