Stroller Types

One of the decisions you’ll have to make in buying a stroller is choosing what type to go with. This can help narrow down your choices to models that fit your needs best. It’s also important to make certain that whatever type you finally decide on you choose a design which comes with a five-point harness closure system (two shoulder straps, two hip straps and one crotch strap). Here’s a quick look at some of your options: • Car seat/stroller travel systems – Although these tend to cost a little more, they also save you the effort of buying a car seat for infants separately. They’re designed primarily as an integrated system that lets you transfer a sleeping infant from car seat to stroller with a minimum of fuss. The more elaborately designed systems will also allow you to use the same system as your child grows a little bigger. • Universal car seat carriers/stroller frames for infant car seats – These are basically wheeled frames that are compatible with a wide range of |
infant car seats. These simpler designs will still let you wheel baby around without transferring them from the car seat just like a car seat travel system. Although these tend to have limited features, they’re actually a very practical and more affordable alternative to often bulky car seat/stroller travel systems.
• Lightweight strollers – Under 12 lbs (5.44 kilos), these designs are your best bet if you’re concerned about fitting a stroller into your car’s trunk or boot. They’re also generally easier to handle than bulkier models and tend to be more affordable too. Just be aware that most lightweight strollers don’t fully recline, which makes them less than ideal for infants. But for children around a year old, they’re an excellent choice.
• Standard-size strollers: Over 12 lbs. (5.44 kilos), these strollers provide maximum comfort for your baby because of all the padding, which also make it bulkier and harder to transport. On the other hand, you’ll notice that most strollers in this category fully recline for infants, unlike their lightweight counterparts. If you choose a standard-size model, be sure to take it for a “test-drive” to see how well it handles around corners first.
• Double (and triple) strollers – You guessed it. These designs are meant to carry multiple bambinos either side by side or front and back (tandem). If you figure out which routes you take when and your babies go out for a stroll, you’ll have a better idea which configuration works best for you. Tandem designs are great for as long as you don’t have to deal with escalators and turning sharp corners. Side by side designs are a little tricky in areas with narrow paths. You may also want to measure doorways. Side by side designs are usually 30 to 31 inches for standard doorways.
• Jogging strollers – If your strolls with the baby take you to roads less traveled, consider a jogging stroller. These have all terrain wheels to take you over grass, sand, dirt, bumpy sidewalks and curbs. These are intended to let the adult get some exercise like jogging, brisk walking or even running, while the baby sleeps or takes in the scenery. Not many jogging stroller models will fully recline fully for infants.
